Stripes in grades

Time for a potentially provoking question:

Why do some systems have stripes in their syllabus? I personally have tabs, one black tab, it signifies half way through the grade and acts as a stimulant, but, this is only in the juniors where they need that bit to keep their interest and make them feel they are moving on, I would not dream of doing it with the seniors.
Question - If you are doing one of these arts that use stripes, please let me know, do you do a full grading for each one? Does it signify 1/2 way to Black for example, with Brown Belt White Stripe? Do you pay for it? It really intrigues me how come it's not clear cut, where abouts in the history did it develop?

I hope somebody out there has answers for me, it really interests me why arts develop in this way, another question while I'm thinking then, is it just Japanese arts or is it other arts as well?

Please, enlighten me.

Congratulations go to Steve Lloyd and Greg Wilson who passed their Blue Belt grading on 02/11/06. Well done guys, a good grading.

Also well done to Stephanie Daglish who moved up from Sho Dan Ho to Sho Dan in the juniors after proving her committment and dedication through training and grading to show she was worth the grade.

New Website

Hi all

Check out the new website, same address www.ensoryu.co.uk, but a very different look to it, still developing and looking for more things to add, want to set up a proper members area where we can display some of these moves we play with and have qustions about!

Any feedback welcome. Looking at doing something else as well, setting up an online central point for all thing JJ,or things MA, reviews, products, this sort of thing, what would be useful to people out there in such things?

Combat Ju-Jitsu Course

Hi, I've just got home from the Combat Ju-Jitsu course in Harrogate UK today, First of all a huge thank you to Hanshi Steve Barnett for organising it, good day, shame we didn't get to see you on the mat.
Secondly, a massive thank you to all the instructors today, at the start Hanshi Barnett said if we could take one thing away from each instructor we'd had a good day, I think everyone would agree we all took away loads from each of them today. One of the best courses I've been on, the techniques were great, the evident quality of the instructors as martial artists was exceptional, whats just as impressive in this day and age was the fact that we had people there from around the globe and whatever else is going on out there to be able to forget all the rubbish in todays societes and come together and train in friendship, whatever your level is extraordinary.
Thirdly, if you weren't there, why not, you've missed something else!!

Why or why not train?

Hi

Just a little musing, I wonder why people train in the martial arts, what makes a person come back session after session, to get thrown around and ultimatley, it's going to hurt. I know why I do it, but I always wonder what drives others. I'm thinking that if I can get my head around that then maybe I can target a prospective new audience.
It always astounds me that more police men/women don't do something like this, or prison officers. I know people in both careers and they get about 1 or 2 days a year. Hold on, your life could very well depend on this surely you'd be there putting more into it? Instead I've heard stories of other officers hiding behind these guys who have done the training!!!
Women as well, in todays society I would love to see more women in the dojo, learn how to protect yourself, then if you meet any of these attackers out there, you can give them the nasty shock and sort them out.

Sounds like common sense to me, maybe I'm wrong?!

Well Done

Gradings have ust taken place, so huge congratulations to Brian Smith and David Kemp who have passed their Purple Belt(2ndKyu), A good and technical gradinng.
Also well done to Ruth Bedder, after a nervous start Ruth got it back and relaxed so that technically it turned into a good grading with plenty of effort, well done.

New training session

Hi

Following on from the notice about a cancelled training session I am happy to announce that we have another Junior session starting on Tuesday nights at the YMCA, Scarborough, North Yorkshire between 7pm and 8pm just before our Senior session.

I hope that people can make this one instead of the cancelled one without too much trouble.

Training sessions cancelled

It is with great regret that I am having to cancel the Wednesday night training sessions at Filey School North Yorkshire. It is due to the charges being increased by the school and I don't think it is fair that Students should be paying £6-£7 an hour for a hall, especially with sub-standard mats.

My regrets and apologies, I will look around for alternatives.

Gradings taken

3 Juniors have just taken their Purple belt Gradings

A massive well done to Hayden James, Philip Clarke and Joseph Cantley-Thompson who on 29th August 2006 completed a long period of training and took their grading to pass and are now Purple Belts at Enso Ryu Ju-Jitsu.

Well done and keep it up.

What do Dan and Kyu mean?

A question I was asked last night at training. I've been reading around a bit and it can get to be quite a hot topic with people offering all sorts of suggestions.

The most sensible one I have found so far is that they actually both mean the same thing - Grade.

What has amused me as well is the different references to the belt system. Some stories saying that everyone starts as a white belt and that eventually it goes yellow then as you train more and more the belt gets dirtier and dirtier till it gets brown and then finally black!

Question - If that was the case then what sort of dirt do they have to turn a belt Blue and Purple?!

What does seem to be the more logical and common theory is it is traced back to Kano who introduced it into his Judo system. As to where do the colours within the bels come from, again opinion varies, I'm not convinced yet on either source, some say Kano introduced it from other areas of sports society to distinguish. Another source says it was introduced much later on within Europe.

Don't know, I'm going to dig around a bit longer on that one I think.

How about the stripes within other systems?

Encouraging students with different grades - Or money making opportunity?

We'll maybe come back to that one!!
